The Fall of the Congo Arabs (1897) By Sidney Langford Hinde

This was a fascinating account of the skirmishes and hardships encountered in the removal by the British of the Moslem slave traders from the Congo in 1892-1895 since the British had oulawed slavery in 1808.

This was an eyewitness account into the alliances that the native tribes had formed for the purpose of assisting the Moslems in the slave trade. It was interesting to me slaves were offered to the British as gifts along the way and they were treated very well and became part of the Army.

The book offers an amazing description of the tribes they found . . . an "all white" tribe, pygmies and cannibals who helped them but preferred eating their own. The description of the jungle and the herds of animals was worth the read alone.

This volume deals with the "Belgian Expedition to the Upper Congo, which developed into a war between Belgian colonial forces and the Arab slave-raiders in Central Africa. Hinde had fought for the Belgians and been decorated for his efforts.
