Fackeln über dem Atlantik: Lebensbericht eines U-Boot-Kommandanten (1997) By Erich Topp
The exemplary curriculum vitae of one of the most successful German submarine commanders, who became Deputy Inspector of the German Navy after the war in 1965. The torches over the Atlantic are a metaphor for war and peace. On the tower of all submarines that went during the war under the command of Erich Topp, there was a coat of arms on which two devils held up their torches, symbolizing destruction and survival. Erich Topp, who took part in the Battle of the Atlantic with U 46 and U 552, was always aware of this narrow borderline - and remained so with regard to his men who went to sea when he was in charge of the 27th U-Boat in 1942 -Flotilla in Gotenhafen.
