The story of the 48th Battalion, which was raised in Egypt in March 1916 and served on the Western Front. (Roughly half the recruits were Gallipoli veterans.) The battalion fought at Pozieres, Passchendaele, Bullecourt, Amiens and Hindenburg. It was disbanded in 1919, the year of publication of this book. "West Australia sent its big, motley proportion, strong, hard men from the goldfields who had learned to give and take hard knocks in many a mining camp."
