This is a historical work chronicles the surrender of Napoleon Bonaparte, as well as his time on the H.M.S. Bellerophon. Bonaparte boarded this ship in 1815 so that he could surrender to the ship's captain, who is the author of this work. This ended twenty-two years of continuous war between Britain and France.

Frederick Lewis Maitland (1777-183) was a Royal Navy officer in both the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He held a number of commands, including rear admiral, and was most famous for witnessing the formal end of the Napoleonic Wars.
