World War II Wasn't All Hell (1988) By Keith Smith

There's not much to laugh at during a war but for one recruit at least, much of World War II was hilarious.

Keith Smith, a young radio announcer and writer called up for compulsory service by the Ar,y in 1940, joined a rather unmilitary unit, the 15th Field Ambulance, and served with it, through good times and bad in Australia, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. He recalls his progression from civilian to soldier at home and abroad, recapturing the funny, frustrating and often touching moments during his war when Australian troops were beset not only by the enemy but often the Army itself.

It is a unique account of how the author and other young Australians, still 'wet behind the ears', found their manhood the hard way — far from the comforts of home.
